Solar cell in Apple iPhone 5, & next iPad may give Apple a leg up
Steve Jobs and Apple couldn’t be happer, everyone is talking about the iPhone 4 and it certainly has some features to be excited about. One problem it suffers from though - just like most other smartphones in the market - is battery life. Lithium-ion battery technology works well but it struggles to provide enough storage capacity in such a confined form factor. One way to solve that problem (at least partially) is by providing alternate energy sources, like the sun.
To use solar energy a device needs to absorb and adapt it to a compatible state, and that’s usually accomplished with solar panels. One of Apple’s recent patent filings indicates that the company is researching and wants exclusive rights to “media players with integrated touch sensor solar panel surfaces,” via GoodCleanTech.
Considering how close in functionality the iPHone 4 is to the HTC Evo, Apple will need need another significant innovation with its next generation of devices in order to maintain a lead in the marketplace. That’s never been more important especially as competition from Android devices, and by connection Google, appear on more carriers and deliver a similar value proposition.

Solar panels for mobile phones have been around for a while, just as third party accessories. Integrating them with the iPhone itself would maintain the chic design but it probably wouldn’t solve the problem of time. It takes quite a while in direct sunlight for a solar cell to charge a smartphone battery so this sort of feature would be cool but only practical in specific situations. Geographies with lots of cloudy days would also struggle to see the benefit.
Still, it’s good to see green technology weaving its way into everyday life. Few devices get more attention than a well-used smartphone so it makes good sense to make them as energy-efficient and recyclable as possible.

With the Solar cell I'm sure Apple iPhone 5 with it's green technology will attract more buyers then the iPhone 4 but the time the solar cell takes to charge may be a flaw in itself. Charging a battery may not be a big chore but since people are busy with hardly time for anything, it can be annoying if the battery life is too short or if it takes a longer time to get charged.

cut the shit!! I didn't even announced it yet!!
Haha, Steve Jobs making an appearance! For real though, if they include a solar cell on the iPhone 5, that would be a tremendous upgrade for extended battery life. If it's not included on this version I think it will be added in the next couple of years.

a very interesting Apple patent is giving us a glance into the future of the iPhone and iPod. It seems Apple has aspirations of engineering solar powered media players and phones. Two things stand out. First the patent was filed for a whole range of devices from iPod to iPad. And second, the solar cells are integrated beneath the device its multi-touch surface as opposed to it being applied to the top surface

Using solar energy is what we should learn to do more. Solar resources will never come to an end. Not to mention that by using it we don't pollute the air we breathe. To be honest it's the first time I hear of solar panels for mobile phones. I'm curious if this works well. I mean I can't imagine a computer working with solar energy. I don't know how much power it can provide. My computer is very slow, I used a registry cleaner and it's still being slow. I wonder if it worked with solar energy... I'm kidding. Solar energy for the win!
If Apple decides to use the technology described in this patent, we won’t even be able to see the difference between a normal and a solar powered iPhone. The solar cells could be used to recharge the batteries or directly power the device (or both). Since the new iPhone uses glass on both sides of de device, I wouldn’t be surprised to see solar cells on both sides of the device as well.
