The old GM was a huge company with diverse product offerings but it struggled to cohesively direct all of its parts toward a central goal; and it also had incurred an overwhelming amount of debt in the form of retirement commitments. With the government’s help, GM has shed a lot of weight and obligations, and now it’s focused on innovating at an accelerated pace. A new deal with startup Bright Automotive is one example, and it further develops GM’s plug-in hybrid portfolio.
Until now most of the new GM’s focus in the plug-in hybrid space has circled around the Chevy Volt, which has a lot of potential to serve the average driver without ever requiring gas during a typical work week. In its contract with Bright Automotive, GM has agreed to invest in return for a minority stake in the startup. Bright Automotive also gains access to much of GM’s technology which it hopes to use while developing a new plug-in hybrid commercial vehicle called IDEA.
IDEA has some similarities to the Chevy Volt in its value proposition, which makes sense considering that some of the underlying technology may be the same. From the press release:
The IDEA delivers a positive total cost of ownership to fleet customers by providing significantly greater fuel efficiency than current fleet vehicles in its class. The IDEA operates in electric mode for 40 miles before switching to an estimated 36-mpg hybrid mode for 100+ mpg potential based on daily driving behavior.
This agreement does a couple of important things for GM. First it allows the company to continue innovating without growing its core staff, and second it diversifies the audience it’s targeting with plug-in hybrid vehicles. Companies who own commercial fleet and transport vehicles are certainly interested in more efficient energy use because even a small gain can make a big difference with lots of vehicles traveling many miles.
Why Tainted Green? Literally, green is only a color. But in typical human fashion we've pumped a cacophony of additional meanings and symbolism into the word. Green has become a marketing tool used by companies with impunity to wrap their products in a balmy haze of "ethical" and "conscientious" approval.
That's where Tainted Green steps in. We are seekers of truth, and we support the fundamental drivers behind the green movement. Ideas like permaculture, renewable energy, and recycling make sense, but companies that express support for green without a wholesome process behind it have tainted the meaning of green. And so, our focus is to create green content that pushes the ideology forward while pointing out which parts look like this year's marketing baggage. Welcome to Tainted Green, where we focus on unearthing the truth about green.

It's very cool to see the commitment to plug in Vehicles here, while the Van uses a slightly different Plug in Hybrid Design, it delivers a similiar value proposition as the Volt.
Incidentally, I've ordered a first run Volt in San Francisco, if you are interested in buying a Volt check out my site http://www.mychevroletvolt.com
Now I might not know much, but when I see giants like Toyota and Honda jumping head first into the game, we know the electric car has a future, but don't take it from me! Here's a pretty engaging article I got a hold of today that I believe will complement your research quite nicely: http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=M2J9P2...
So if you have a minute, this one's not a bad read :)
Gm is still the leader in spite of the very hard times it went through. The Chevy Volt is mighty expensive but if we're talking about GM trying to make our cars run on our fuels rather then relying on other countries somehow makes sense too but still, I won't be one amongst those to buy the Chevy's limited edition. However what caught my attention about GM is, it is going to recall 100,000 of it's vehicles due to seatbelt problems, the recall is slated to start from January, now what does this lead to? let's hope it's not too bad for the owners specially.
