GMs and Nissans partly made of pineapples? - “Green” plastics for automotive industry

Pineapple01 Researchers from Brazil announced successful development of a new form of plant fiber-based plastic as stiff as Kevlar and supposedly stronger, lighter yet more eco-friendly than plastics currently in use. Can we expect fiber-based dashboards in future Nissan leafs, GM Volts etc.? Are these fiber-based plastics truly eco-friendly?

When finely grinding up cellulose tiny fiber particles are produced. Mixing these tiny particles, which are so small that 50,000 of them could fit into the width of a human hair, into the plastics, results in stronger and more durable plastics. Alcides Leao, the team leader responsible for the development of fiber-based plastics sais, that these nano-cellulose fibers can be almost as strong as Kevlar, and in addition, they are a renewable source.

EPA tests hurts hybrids like the Toyota Prius

Tailpipe SmogYour drive to work is a pleasure, uninterrupted by traffic or red lights, right? If not, perhaps you should work for the EPA, the Environment Protection Agency. These are the people who design the test cycles in order to generate the fuel efficiency ratings for each vehicle sold in the United States. Someone there felt that it was good idea to include just a single stop when measuring a car's fuel efficiency in the city. I can only assume their drive to work is a breeze. The result is that hybrid electric cars like the Toyota Prius and the Chevy Volt are not given any credit for fuel saved when their engines are turned off in traffic.

What Does That Matter?

Major firmware update powers the Nook way past the Kindle

Major firmware update powers the Nook way past the Kindle When it comes to gadgets like smart phones and tablet computers, consumers like gadgets that can have multiple functions through apps and video capability. This fact hasn’t been lost on Barnes & Noble with their Android powered e-reader, the Nook Color. An upcoming firmware update will transform the e-reader into a cheap tablet computer that could smother the Kindle when it comes to sales.

Prius and Volt owners need to pay for roads too

Prius and Volt owners need to pay for roads too

Although fuel taxes encourage people to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Toyota Prius and Chevy Volt, these vehicles still use roads and cause road wear. But funding to repair roads comes from fuel taxes, and, as more people drive the Prius and Volt and other fuel-efficient cars, the revenue from fuel taxes can no longer cover required highway spending. A solution to this funding shortfall is to tax drivers per mile rather than per gallon.

The Highway Trust Fund, financed by federal fuel taxes set at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel in 1993, provides funding to repair and build federal highways. Since 2008, however, highway spending surpassed the revenues from the trust fund. To make up the shortfall, the Treasury has had to provide $30 billon to the trust fund.

Man-made trees that clean the air! Green technology?

treepods-14 SHIFT Boston,  an environmental municipal incentive, and Influx Studio from Paris are cooperating on a project named Treepods – artificial trees which would remove CO2 from air in their vicinity by using solar power, recycled plastic and kinetic energy from built-in playing devices. Their initiative is to install Tripods throughout Boston, creating an urban canopy.

Supposedly a green technology innovation, Treepods are described as modular man-made trees produced from recycled plastic (polyethylene terephthalate - PET). Using installed photovoltaic panels, they would produce part of the energy needed to strip the surrounding air of carbon dioxide, turning it into clean air with an alkaline resin. When the CO2-saturated resin reacts with water, probably meaning rain, it will release the carbon dioxide for storage.

KB Home proves that solar power isn’t just for treehuggers

KB Home proves that solar power isn’t just for treehuggers Like the rest of the economy, the real estate market hasn’t been healthy for a number of years. Builders have had to lay off workers, brokers aren’t cashing a lot of commission checks, and a lot of new homes remain empty for months. Many are looking to green ideas to set their properties apart from vanilla-type construction and a high number of foreclosures hitting the market. Construction giant KB Home is taking this idea to heart and has plans to build a number of communities where solar panels are installed on every starter home.

Building trails and open spaces requires open minds

Building trails and open spaces requires open minds From the country to the city, people oppose efforts for trails, bike lanes and open spaces. But in spite of homeowner’s fears, greenways and trails bring both economic and recreational benefits to communities. Even though the value of trails and greenways are well documented, the only way to convince people of these benefits is to persevere and build the greenway.

A recent study prepared by the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Econsult Corporation, and Keystone Conservation Trust quantified the value of the open space in a 5-county region in southeastern Pennsylvania, which includes Philadelphia. Around 14% of the region - 300 square miles – is protected as open space or trails.

Amazon may get some Android action with tablet & app store

Amazon may get some Android action with tablet & app store After they unveiled the Kindle, Amazon didn’t have a lot of competition when it came to the e-reader market. Recent tablet computer entries like the iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Morotola’s Xoom are cutting into Kindle sales because of their sleek profiles and multimedia capabilities. Reports have surfaced that they are keen to hire a gaggle of Android developers; a point that may hint at a Kindle Tablet and an app store.

EV vs. Hydrogen: Obama proposes 88% boost for EV, 40% cut for Hydrogen

image Obama undoubtedly supports EV technology more than hydrogen at this point. The “EV vs. Hydrogen” transport battle is leaning towards EV: $588 million for EV technologies (+88%), $200 million for communities investing in EV infrastructure. A $70 million (-40%) investment cut for Hydrogen technology program. EV vs. Hydrogen. 1:0.

Obama’s goal is to have 1 million EV and PHEV advanced technology vehicles on US roads by 2015. President Obama’s EV proposal is based on new efforts to support EV manufacturing, new consumer rebates, investment in R&D and competitive programs to encourage communities that invest in electric vehicle infrastructure.

Reusable water bottles keep money from going down the drain

Reusable water bottles keep money from going down the drainPeople in the US consume eight billion gallons of water in 50 million bottles annually, in spite of an abundance of nearly free, good tasting tap water. Instead of buying bottled water, a reusable water bottle and a little planning can go a long way to both save money and the environment.

So why do people buy bottled water? Mainly, because it is convenient. For health conscious people, grabbing a bottle of water while on the go or at a meeting is a better choice than a can of soda or a sugary fruit drink. Additionally, bottled water often does taste better than tap water. The taste of tap water can be hit or miss depending on its source and treatment, but bottled water is normally filtered and treated (at least we hope so).

Earthquake in Japan may leave Toyota Prius in short supply

Earthquake in Japan may leave Toyota Prius in short supply Toyota hasn’t had the easiest year with a number of recalls and a very public Congressional hearing. Things were looking bright for the Japanese automaker in recent weeks with US buyers flocking to dealerships to check out the Prius. The horrific events in the country may impact the number of hybrids that Toyota can ship to the US for some time.

A lot of Japanese car manufacturers source parts from US based plants such as parts from Denso in Battle Creek, Michigan or even set up shop with manufacturing facilities like Nissan’s Leaf plant in Tennessee. The Prius is a bit different because it is sourced entirely in Japan. With limited power supplies and a heavily damaged infrastructure it may be difficult for Toyota to get the Prius back in US showrooms.

The best investment you can make right now is to plant a tree

The best investment you can make right now is to plant a treeWith the recent near-apocalyptic events of earthquakes, tsunamis, and nuclear accidents, it’s easy to think that individual actions don’t matter. Instead of fretting about climate change and other world problems, there’s something you can do right now as a gift to future generations: plant a tree.

In tough economic times, some argue that – although trees are nice – spending money on planting and maintaining them is not a justified cost. Contrary to that sentiment, research on urban trees shows that they provide vital economic benefits.

Jill Jonnes’s article What Is a Tree Worth? examines the benefits that trees provide. She discusses studies done in Chicago, Sacramento, and New York City to assess the value of urban trees. According to the 2006 New York study, the half million trees in New York City provide $122 million in benefits. These include:

Rolls Royce electric vehicle vs. one with gasoline engine = Nuclear Power Plant vs. Solar panels

Rolls-Royce-102EX-electric Rolls Royce is sending a jolt to the EV market by testing a new electric vehicle – the Rolls Royse 102EX in order to see if the market could absorb some electric luxury. It’s hard to admit, but we still need gasoline-powered cars like we still need nuclear power plants, that doesn’t mean solar panels aren’t a great solution though.

Donate your iPad, be a hero when it comes to education & e-waste

Donate your iPad, be a hero when it comes to education & e-waste When new gadgets like the iPad 2 are introduced, their previous versions are often stashed away or even tossed in the trash. The EPA estimated that as much as 75% of the computers in the US are hidden away in the country’s closets and cubby holes. Instead of letting fifteen million first generation iPads end up in a landfill or remain unused, donate your old tablet to a worthy educator through Teach For America and you might even get a tax break.

Japan Nuclear Reactor and Earthquake disaster – Donate, share and forward this link

in

Japan has been struck by a 9.0 earthquake, flooded and leveled by a 10m tsunami and 2 out of 10 Fukushima Nuclear reactors (Reactors 2 and 3 of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant I) have been heavily damaged. Presently radiation at 8 miliSv (dangerous if exposed more than 6 hrs at a time). You can read more here. Google has set up a site where you can donate funds directly to those who need them, JUST FOLLOW THIS LINK.

The Fukushima nuclear reactor: how dangerous is it?

The Fukushima nuclear reactor: how dangerous is it?A lot of people who know nothing about nuclear power are saying a lot of things these days during the Japanese nuclear crisis. I’ve toured two different nuclear reactors and my experiences there have taught me a few things that you may not know and that might shed some sober light on this subject.

Guess: How Many People Have Already Been Exposed To Radiation?

Almost 7 billion people are exposed to radiation each day. That's right, the entire population of the world is constantly absorbing radiation from the earth, from the sun, and from the universe. As a resident of Denver Colorado, I get about three times as much radiation as most people do along the coasts. The Mile High City is above much of the atmosphere, and the Rocky Mountains are full of radioactive substances. People living in other parts of Colorado are exposed to even more radiation. Radiation is everywhere; the question is really how much radiation people are receiving beyond their normal exposure. Think about that when you hear a panicked report of slightly elevated levels of radiation in Tokyo.

Li-Ion batteries for EVs and PHEVs are scaring some people

Basic RGBEV skeptics are among us! And one of the favorite arguments they use is »what  about the EV batteries?! Li-Ion-powered EVs and PHEVs pollute more than regular cars!«

Put your Li-Ion-powered mobile phone or mp3 player away for a moment and explore the basics of Li-Ion batteries life-cycle with us, let’s see if there's something to substantiate these doubts.

Charge it: a new battery swap program for electric cars

http://taintedgreen.com/government-policies/high-gas-prices-force-uk-government-to-finally-take-action/000954/kr-13 As oil prices keep inching up due to the events in Northern Africa and the Middle East, many Americans are looking at electric cars to reduce the pain at the pump. There’s one big problem, though. You most likely have a gas station near your home or workplace, but not a charging station to power up your Leaf or Volt. A company called Better Place may change the EV world with their novel idea of swap-out batteries for electric cars.

Former SAP higher-up Shai Agassi was a little perplexed when it came to electric cars. He wondered why car manufacturers couldn’t take the same battery based approach to their product as simple items like a TV remote or flashlight; simply swap out your depleted power source for a fresh battery.

PHEV Volt + $2.5 billion + U.S. WasteWise Hall of Fame = GM

PHEV VOLT + $2.5 BILLION + U.S. WASTEWISE HALL OF FAME = GMLately GM is mostly mentioned with regards to the bold industrial step it is undertaking with its PHEV the GM Volt. But did you know GM has been inducted to the U.S. EPA WasteWise Hall of fame and that they’ve managed to make over $2.5 billion in earnings since 2007 just by managing their waste?

GM Volt, the PHEV. PHEV stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Basically it means it’s got a regular internal combustion engine and an electric motor and it can be plugged into the grid. That’s very important and it’s got to do with Vehicle-to-grid technology. Essentially, once infrastructure and system are in place, the GM Volt will aid the power grid at peak-times when energy demand is high by returning clean energy it “harvested” from renewable sources such as solar panels placed on your house roof. That makes EV and PHEV the only way to save renewable energy and return it to the power grid when needed!

Report tries to claim energy efficiency counterproductive

Report tries to claim energy efficiency counterproductiveIn a remarkable coincidence, congressional Republicans are attempting to repeal energy efficiency for light bulbs just weeks after the Breakthrough Institute issued a report claiming that energy efficiency standards actually increase energy consumption. But a closer reading of the report belies its own conclusion.

The reasoning behind the paradoxical conclusion that energy efficiency increases energy consumption is based on the idea that money saved from reduced energy costs will be spent on as high or higher energy activities, resulting in a “rebound effect.” The claim is that by reducing the cost of energy through efficiency, more of it will be consumed. For example, someone who purchases a high mileage car might then drive more miles, or homeowners who insulate their house would then turn up the thermostat.

Wall Street Journal scores big with iPad & Kindle owners

Wall Street Journal scores big with iPad & Kindle owners Newspapers haven’t had the easiest time transitioning into the digital age. They’ve lost subscribers as well as ad revenue, a combination that may change the future of many publications. Some publishers are looking to paywalls or digital subscriptions for mobile devices to make ends meet. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) bet big on gadgets like the Kindle and the iPad and it paid off with over 100,000 new digital subscriptions.

Fart in a jar: scatological solutions to energy needs

Save gas, fart in a jar: scatological solutions to energy needsCars first began to sport bumper stickers that read “Save Gas, Fart in a Jar” during the oil shocks of the 1970’s. Now as gasoline prices again spike, this tongue-in-cheek advice may actually be on to something. Rather than relying on biofuels that are derived from food crops, renewable energy developed from food that the body already processed and eliminated might be a solution to our energy needs. Two technologies purport to do just that: to turn urine and excrement into energy.

LED and 3D TV buyers caught in a pickle with TV screen sizes

LED and 3D TV buyers caught in a pickle with TV screen sizes Choosing the best TV screen size for the average consumer has become quite the challenge. Would a 46-inch LED TV be the best fit in the living room or would a 32-inch LED TV look better above the fireplace? Should it be mounted to the wall or placed in an entertainment center? Choices, choices, and more choices. Not to mention, for those that look at 3D TV as a viable option, viewing angles become an important consideration for the location of the TV. Now, throw in the fact that aspect ratios, throughout history, are all over the board and determining the correct screen size becomes very complicated.

The introduction of the Philips Cinema 21:9 Gold Series certainly does not help simplify the matter.

Here's the problem.

Green yet? Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday: Be the Dan Kanter or get the Charlie Sheen out!

Green yet? Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday: Be the Dan Kanter or get the Charlie Sheen out! Dan Kanter is the lead guitarist in Justin Bieber’s band. He’s supportive, in the background even though he could be famous, but most importantly wanted by his colleagues. Charlie Sheen supposedly just the opposite. Which role will you pick on this Fat Tuesday or any holiday, the supportive one? Who will you support? Family and friends by overcooking and overloading on food and drinks or your body and planet by eating a healthy meal and not overdoing it? How green is your behavior?

When it comes to choosing between our own comfortable pleasures which are very easy to imagine and anything unimaginable, no matter how good it is, we always tend to pick the most comfortable thing. Does that mean we’re only as green as it suits us? Most of the time and in most countries.

Google goes green by routing drivers around traffic jams on Android devices

Google goes green by routing drivers around traffic on Android devicesGoogle made an announcement yesterday that at first glance seems a great way to save time while driving places. But, the impact isn’t just in time savings, it also has potential to impact the environment in a positive way. Imagine if this new routing were to create even a 5% efficiency. With over 35 million miles driven by Google Navigation users every day, that’s a savings of nearly 1.8 million miles -- daily!

Drill that down even further and the potential environmental impact becomes even more clear. Consider an average fuel economy of 20 miles per gallon and that nets out 87,500 gallons (over 2,000 barrels) of gasoline saved every day. Of course, quantifying that efficiency gain in a scientific method would require a more thorough understanding of how reducing idling time impacts fuel economy and then create a trajectory for calculating that savings with more accuracy. This simple calculation is only meant to illustrate proportional potential.

High gas prices force UK government to finally take action

High gas prices force UK government to finally take action Its been a stunning year so far in Northern Africa with long standing dictators and despots being forced out of power by public uprisings. As the clashes in Libya continue many oil companies are having a hard time getting their products out of the region. While Americans may whine that $4.00 is a lot for a gallon of gas, drivers in the UK are paying about $8.00 for the same product. Angry drivers are forcing the British government to take a hard look on how they can back away from foreign oil while they keep their economic recovery on track.

Elected leaders focus on wrong debt crisis

Elected leaders focus on wrong debt crisisConcerns over the rising national debt helped sweep the Republican majority into Congress. Everyone in Washington seems to agree that spending needs to be reined in; the only debate is what to cut and by how much. But these concerns about the public debt could just as well be applied to the nearly unheralded – and more important - natural debt crisis.

Everyone understands financial debt and what happens when you spend more than you make. Although people can live on credit for some time, a day of reckoning sooner or later arrives. To be financially responsible requires living within one’s means.

VW resurrects the legendary Bulli as an all-electric microbus

VW resurrects the legendary Bulli as an all-electric microbus Back in the late 1990’s Volkswagen (VW) got a lot of acclaim for their updated version of the Beetle. The iconic form was updated to more modern tastes with sleeker lines and whimsical additions like a flower vase. VW has taken the same sensibility to re-introduce the van known worldwide as the Type Two, microbus, or Bulli as a sleek all-electric van made for iPad toting hipsters.

Report concludes that BP oil spill was “entirely preventable.”

Report concludes that BP oil spill was “entirely preventable.”On April 20, 2010, a BP drilling rig exploded, killing 11 men and wounding 17 . For three months, the world watched aghast as oil poured from the failed well into the Gulf of Mexico. When the well was finally capped, nearly 5 million barrels of oil escaped, making the accident the biggest marine oil spill and the worst environment disaster that ever occurred in the Gulf. After months of investigation, the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill recently released its report. The committee concluded that the root cause of the accident was poor management decisions. This report needs to be a wake-up call to industry to put safety and environment before profits.

Can the most impressive car at Geneva Motor Show be considered "green?"

Can the most impressive car at Geneva Auto Show be considered "green?" For manufacturers at auto shows, getting noticed means demanding the public's attention; girls, fancy lights, demonstrations, VIP lounges, concept cars and dynamic displays all clamor for the attentive gaze of the crowd, and for the most part, boisterous exhibits translate into excessive buzz. With the Koenigsegg Agera R, the questions is, how much is too much?

Now regarded as perhaps the most powerful production sports car in the world, the Koenigsegg Agera R is truly a one-of-a-kind sports car. Set to debut at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show, the bi-turbo 5.0L V8 engine features a 0-62 mph time of 2.9 seconds and comes with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Even more impressive, at least from a power perspective, is the 1,115 horsepower potential.

So how does the Agera R achieve a horsepower so off the charts?

Ethanol.

Yes, the secret of this ridiculously fast (260 mph) vehicle is the ethanol.

Apple is making business more efficient one iPad at a time

Apple is making business more efficient one iPad at a timeMicrosoft may have introduced Windows Tablet PCs more than a decade ago, but they were for specialized purposes and failed to attract mass interest. Fast forward to 2010 and Apple, high from years of success with the iPod and iPhone, launches the iPad which extends the iOS halo to yet another, larger screen device. With much of Apple’s massive apps catalog behind it - and a savagely potent marketing acumen - a large swath of consumers and businesses have begun to integrate the iPad into their everyday routines.
